Tomie Arai: Double Happiness, continues The Bronx Museum of the Arts’ commitment to exhibiting midcareer artists who have produced an important body of work but have not been widely recognized among larger, “mainstream” art museums. Arai originally participated in our Artist in the Marketplace program in 1986. This is the first museum exhibition to survey a decade of Arai’s work, and it is a unique opportunity to present a major new project. Arai has devoted herself to making art an integral part of everyday life by joining the community mural movement in the 1970s and creating works in the 1980s that reconstructed the histories of Asian Americans. This exciting collaboration with Arai has led us to examine the vitality of the Chinese diaspora to the Caribbean and Latin America, which has resulted in culturally hybrid communities that have much in common with the Bronx today.
