To mark the closing of Medicina de Amor—solo exhibition of recent work by Gerardo Dexter Ciprian—Cuando el Rio Suena, es Porque Piedras Trae will feature an extended version of the eponymous short film featured in the exhibition and a live performance by the artist. The film draws on Ciprian’s family VHS records and other archival footage to unearth the ephemera of the Dominican diaspora and broader immigrant imaginary. The live performance borrows its title from one of the most recognizable bachatas from the Dominican Republic by Raulin Rodriguez. Inspired by the prevalent blackouts during Ciprian’s childhood in the Dominican Republic, the performance recreates the sense of intimacy and closeness they experienced when the family would gather around the flame of a candle to share stories of wisdom, mystery and resilience.
